Mission Statement

Welcome to the Companion Website for Van Gogh: The Life

This website is designed to accompany the book Van Gogh: The Life by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith, which was published by Random House on October 18, 2011. It makes available more than 28,000 research notes, filling more than 6,000 type-written pages. Due to their size and complexity, these notes could not be included in the printed book.

All of this additional material is available exclusively on the web.

Although the site is designed to be used in conjunction with Van Gogh: The Life, it does not have to be. The entire corpus of notes is searchable by keyword for those interested in Van Gogh and in topics relevant to the artist. The site also includes galleries of photographs and artworks by Van Gogh and others that can be browsed independently of the book.

Our aim is not only to enhance the experience of reading Van Gogh: The Life, but also to provide content that is of interest to a larger audience of scholars, students, aficionados, and others attracted to the endlessly fascinating world and work of Vincent van Gogh.

Co-author Steven Naifeh also has a new book titled Van Gogh and the Artists He Loved. Visit artistsvangoghloved.com to learn more.
